The Devious Desktops – Screens of Terror Challenge is one in a series of community activations prompting the DeviantArt community to create desktop wallpapers following a theme. This activation, in particular, launched during the Halloween season and asked artists to enter horror-themed art for their chance to win one of three 5K monitors from LG, DeviantArt’s partnering sponsor.
I combined 50’s sci-fi horror conventions with traditional screen printing motifs for the main aesthetic. And thematically, I opted for a central robot-monster-thing looming over the primary title treatment to create a suUuUuper-edgy cliche effect.
When designing all the different components of the vector-based key art, I ensured that the final product would accommodate other use-cases, such as LOOPING VERTICAL VIDEO:
During the initial conception, I aimed at including three central figures to the key-art design, mirroring the three potential prize winners of the challenge. But as the character design and title treatment evolved, I ended up killing a couple of monsters to
reduce unneeded complexity make my life easier.
